2010 SMART Scholarship Applications
Due 15 December 2009

The deadline for 2010 SMART (Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation) Scholarship applications is 15 December 2009.

The SMART Scholarship for Service Program was established by the US Department of Defense (DOD) to support graduate students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) degree programs with the aim of increasing the number of civilian scientists and engineers working in DOD laboratories.

Students in the following fields are encouraged to apply: Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering; Biosciences; Chemical Engineering; Chemistry; Civil Engineering; Cognitive, Neural, and Behavioral Sciences; Computer and Computational Sciences; Electrical Engineering; Geosciences; Industrial and Systems Engineering (technical tracks only); Information Sciences; Materials Science and Engineering; Mathematics; Mechanical Engineering; Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering; Nuclear Engineering; Oceanography; Operations Research (technical tracks only); and Physics.

SMART Scholarship recipients receive a cash award of $25,000-$41,000 per year, depending on prior educational experience; full tuition and related educational expenses; health insurance; book allowance; summer internships (for multi-year participants); and post-graduation career opportunities.

Applicants must be US citizens; at least 18 years old as of 1 August 2010; able to receive and hold a government security clearance; able to participate in summer internships at DOD laboratories; willing to accept post-graduation employment with the DOD; students in good standing with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (as calculated by the SMART application); and pursuing a graduate degree in one of the fields listed above.
