McNair Graduate Assistantship Program
McNair Graduate Assistantships provide one year of full tuition, fees and health insurance plus a stipend of $12,000 for McNair undergraduate scholars from any institution who are pursuing their first year of PhD study at the University of Florida.
Purpose: The McNair Graduate Assistantship Program is designed to address the under-representation of faculty of target populations at colleges and universities in the State of Florida by increasing the pool of citizens qualified with doctorates to teach at the college and university levels. It is meant to assist students who have completed the McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program at any institution. The McNair program was started in 1989 by Congress and administered by the United States Department of Education to help students from underrepresented populations gain training for advancement to the PhD and professoriate.
Eligible Fields of Study: Eligible fields of study include any PhD program at the University of Florida. Academic programs that lead to professional degrees such as the Au.D., Ed.D., M.D., D.M.D, J.D., D.P.M., M.F.A., and D.V.M. are not covered by the McNair Graduate Assistantship Program.
The Award: Up to five assistantships will be awarded annually for the first year of PhD study at the University of Florida. Each award provides full tuition, fees and health insurance plus an annual stipend of $12,000. Academic units may supplement the McNair Graduate Assistantship Program stipend according to program and college policy. The student will be appointed and perform research assistant duties under faculty supervision.
Who May Apply: Applicants must have successfully completed the McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program at any institution, and be admitted as a full-time student to a PhD program at UF. Since this program is intended to increase enrollment in PhD programs, currently enrolled doctoral students are not eligible to apply. We hope this assistantship will aid academic units in their recruitment of underrepresented graduate students. Interested students should apply by submitting an application to the Office of Graduate Minority Programs, 115 Grinter Hall, by 5:00 p.m. on 29 February 2008. Requirements for consideration include: (1) Admission to a UF PhD program; (2) the completed McNair Graduate Assistantship application form found online here: McNair Graduate Assistantship Application and (3) a letter from the undergraduate McNair Program indicating successful completion.
