South East Alliance for
Graduate Education and the Professoriate

The South East Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (SEAGEP) Program is designed to help domestic minority and underrepresented students pursue teaching and research careers. The University of Florida is the lead institution, in partnership with Clemson University, the University of South Carolina, the Florida-Georgia Louis B. Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation in Science, Engineering and Mathematics (a 13-member coalition of universities), the South Carolina Louis B. Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation in Science, Engineering and Mathematics (a 12-member coalition of universities), and the University of the Virgin Islands. SEAGEP also partners with the Latin American and Caribbean Consortium of Engineering Institutions.

This program leads students step by step along a path from an undergraduate degree program, through graduate school, to a career in academia. It provides financial support and support mechanisms to facilitate their successful completion of doctoral degrees. In doing so, it increases the diversity of graduate students in science, engineering and mathematics at the University of Florida, while contributing to the diversification of teachers and researchers in higher education. Ranking 19th in the United States in the number of doctorates awarded, with superlative interdisciplinary research facilities like the National High Magnetic Field, the Brain Institute, the Particle Engineering Research Center and the Biotechnology Program, UF is a major contributor to this unique partnership and its success in bringing greater diversity to academia.
